Phyllostachys nigra (Black Bamboo)
One of the bamboo that we encounter most often is Phyllostachys nigra or commonly called Black Bamboo.

This bamboo is often sold and widely believed by many homeowners to be a garden safe bamboo that does not spread readily, however this is far from the case.

Phyllostachys nigra is a very popular choice of bamboo for many people due to its attractive and unusual culm colour being very dark, sence the name of Black Bamboo.
Black Bamboo does not actually start black, the culms start life green in colour, but turn dark over the next two to three years.

It is widely planted to form attractive privacy screens or simply as a garden feature.
The real problem is that very often privacy planting takes place on boundaries, with very little separation to the neighbouring property.

Phyllostachys nigra is quite a complex grower.
Whilst it is often classed as a clumping bamboo, and initially it does produce a dense tighly formed clump, very often at some point once it reaches maturity and if conditions are right, it produces very rapidly growing running rhizomes that will spread extensively throughout the surrounding area.
The age that this expansion can take place ranges hugely, from just a few years of age up to fifteen or twenty years, where completely unexpectedly rapidly expansion takes place, taking homeowners by complete surprise.

It is this rapid expansion that can have serious consequences, rhizomes spread into neighbouring properties or throughout you own property.
The risk of spreading into lawns, plant filled borders or hard landscaped areas is real, with then the added expense of making good these areas.

A good example of how a long established Phyllostachys nigra started to rapidly spread can be see in this case study of a Phyllostachys nigraBamboo Removal in Exeter.
