This North Devon bamboo removal case study shows how a seemingly small confined clump of bamboo can in reality be affecting a much larger area.
The impact of the bamboo actually affects most of the gravel covered top terrace of this garden. This includes the mature roses growing on the wall that are much valued.

Bamboo often spreads invisibly underground, in this case under the weed proof membrane and gravel covering it.
The only clues to the rhizome expansion are the ridges that were forming in the gravel, at the edges culms were starting to appear as the rhizome reached the membrane edge, culms then emerging, growing upwards creating new areas of colonisation.
It is not until this happens that you will be aware of the true extent of the bamboo problem.

The access for this rear garden was very limited, certainly not suitable for a small excavator, so all works were by hand.

The team set about mapping out the rhizome, carefully ensuring that all was found and removed.

Bamboo has an amazing ability at finding cracks and weaknesses in any hard landscaping, rhizomes often exploiting these weaknesses and growing through, as the rhizome expands and grows making the weakness or crack more severe.
It is this process that makes bamboo such a problem, the damage it is able to cause can be quite shocking.
One of our photographs shows how rhizome found a small gap in the wall corner and its growth into the gap.
If this had been left, without doubt the issue would have become greater, eventually causing damage to the wall and the potential costs to correct the damage.

Bamboo removal is an invasive process, however the skill is to be able to undertake works to the required standard, whilst leaving the impacted area in as good a finished condition as possible.
The photographs once again demonstrate our ability to leave work areas in a great standard after works.
