Phyllostachys “running” wild in this garden !

This Phyllostachys had only been planted a couple of years previously, but already it was completely out of control, spreading significantly into the lawn, running under the raised decking, and also encroaching into the neighbouring garden.

In cases like this there is no time to waste, removal is needed.
If this running Phyllostachys had been left for another season the situation would have been significantly worse.
The encroachment into the neighbouring garden would have needed extensive remediation works, it is also likely that the decking area would have needed to be dismantled to gain access for the removal of the running rhizomes.

Even though this Phyllostachys was still young it was already producing large diameter culms. Culms of this diameter have great power, and can be very destructive, it is likely that if these had been left they would have caused real damage to the decking.

Phyllostachys is considered to have an aggressive growth pattern, certainly not the type of plant to be in a domestic garden with limited space and planted on a boundary.
