This bamboo root barrier was installed last year by a “National Bamboo Removal Company” who obviously will remain nameless.
The cost of this root barrier was significant, bamboo remediation and control works are never cheap but the cost of this was certainly fairly significant.

Did this root barrier represent good value?
Was it even well advised?

In fairness, the homeowner of this property was keen to retain the extensive bamboo grove that provides an element of protection from the prevailing winds, it was the expanding rhizome that was a concern to her.

Was a root barrier a good idea for her situation?

There is extensive rhizome expansion in a very large area surrounding the main bamboo.
This rhizome produces a large number of canes throughout the area on a very regular basis.
These new growth canes are something that the homeowner removes on a daily basis in the peak growing season.

Has the bamboo root barrier provided any real benefit, we believe not.

The main bamboo colony is untouched, very healthy and productive as ever.
The extensive and significant rhizome mass remains throughout the very large surrounding area of paddock type grass.

This remaining rhizome is perfectly viable on its own, the fact that it is now separated from the main colony will make very little difference.

So what benefit has been gained from the bamboo root barrier?
Very little we believe.

So whilst the bamboo root barrier will if managed correctly stop or greatly reduce further expansion from the colony it will not make any difference to the bamboo rhizome that is outside of the root barrier.

Perhaps there was a misunderstanding of the clients aim for the works.
The root barrier was certainly part of a plan, sadly not a complete plan.

We have been asked to assess the new growth and formulate a plan to deal with the ever expanding growth of this runaway bamboo rhizome, which is what the homeowner really wanted.
