This bamboo was typical of many that we see, a form of attractive vegetation providing privacy screening from neighbouring properties, sadly there are significant downsides of bamboo in domestic gardens.

The bamboo was planted in amongst other erotic plants to create a lovely oriental feel to this town centre recently built townhouse. Initially the bamboo would have been completely seperate from the other plants, but due to its tendency to spread it had encroached amongst them all and was now taking over.

The bamboo was planted in a raised walled bed which had intially contained its growth, however recently rhizomes had spread up and over the rear section of wall and had now started to expand out and encroach ionto the neighbouring garden to the rear, if left this would have made the situation and removal costs much more significant.

Gardens like this with limited access, raised patios or decking certainly make bamboo removal more challenging, the use of excavators is often nopt possible, this means all excavation works need to be by hand.

Clumping bamboo rhizome is tough, very tough, much like a tree stump, removal by hand is very hard going. This means whilst the total volume is not significant, the work to remove is not the same.

The planting of bamboo, or allowing its continued growth in situations like this should be very carefully considered.
It may provide great privacy, but the point at which it becomes a problem the reality will hit home with quite a shock, as we always say “bamboo should not be planted in domestic gardens”
