Removal of above ground canes and in ground rhizomes, using manual and or mechanical excavation.
Chemical treatment to any inaccessible areas and material.

- Physical removal of culms and rhizomes.
- Affected area left in tidy condition.
- Reduced likelihood and quantity of future growth.
- Best option for encroachment into third party land as the bamboo is physically removed.
- Environmentally preferable with less herbicide use.
DISADVANTAGES
- Higher initial cost.
- Works are destructive, however leaves area in a tidier condition.
- May need hard landscaping removal for maximum rhizome removal.
- Will require removal of affected plants, shrubs, hedges and possibly trees.
THE FINISHED CONDITION.
Once works are completed the “Work Area” will be left in tidy condition, which will likely be a tidy ground condition. The bamboo rhizome will be removed.

Finished Condition

Limited Access Bamboo Removal
Bamboo removal for locations with limited access, where excavator access is not possible, for example up significant steps or terraced gardens.
This method removes the rhizome mass from the soil.
Physical bamboo rhizome removal is necessary if you are planning on replanting or using the area again in the near or medium term future.
This method does involve the use of herbicide.
Costs are similar to that of bamboo excavation.
ADVANTAGES
- Able to access areas excavators are unable to.
- Removes bamboo rhizome from the ground.
- Leaves useable area after works.
- Faster remediation than standard herbicide treatment.
- Less herbicide usage than herbicide treatment alone.
DISADVANTAGES
- Slightly longer eradication time scale than excavation.
The Finished Condition.
The finished condition of the work area will be similar to that of bamboo excavation, a tidy soil condition.
Following Works.
The work area is monitored and any regrowth will be either removed or herbicide treated.
Bamboo Herbicide Treatment
A lower cost option for bamboo management and longer term eradication.
Either foliar herbicide treatment to short culms or culm cutting and stem treatment.
Does not physically remove the bamboo culm stubs or rhizome.
Ideal where budget restrictions outweigh eradication time scale and ongoing/finished condition of the area.
A series of treatments will be needed for bamboo remediation.
ADVANTAGES
- Lower initial costs.
- No destructive works in the area.
- Lower costs enable work to commence with less budget restrictions.
- Less likely to need adjacent plants, shrubs, hedges or trees removing.
DISADVANTAGES
- For complete remediation repeated herbicide treatments will be needed.
- Future costs of additional herbicide treatment.
- The area is effectively unusable due to culm stumps and rhizome in the ground, much like a “bed of nails”
- Environmental impact from herbicide use.
- Possible damage to close proximity plants from herbicide use.
- Less suitable for encroachment into third party land due to herbicide use.
THE FINISHED CONDITION
The major difference with herbicide treatments is that the bamboo culm stubs and rhizome are not removed from the ground.
This leaves the ground in an unuseable condition. Once the bamboo has been completely killed the area/ground will need work to bring it into a useable condition. At this point in time it is likely that the remaining stubs and rhizome may have started to decay.
At this stage where large areas of rhizome is present we would recommend optional stump grinding of the affected area to break up the rhizome mass.
