Bamboo Removal in Exeter.

Many people have very fixed ideas about bamboo and whether it spreads or not.

Black Bamboo (Phyllostachys Nigra) is very often mentioned as one that does not, however we have a very different opinion. 

The bamboo in this  Exeter garden was planted by the homeowners a number of years previously to complement their low maintenance landscaped front garden. 

Recently our clients had noticed that the bamboo was spreading. 

Canes (culms) had been noticed starting to rise in the neighbouring garden. Bamboo encroachment is a very serious issue. Our clients were very aware of the potential problems. 

Upon investigation a fairly extensive amount of rhizome was found running to the boundary fence and into the neighbouring garden.

As is normal with clumping bamboo the excavation process is extremely hard going. The rhizome mass produced is incredibly tough and takes significant effort to remove. Our photographs show sections of the rhizome once removed. It shows the rhizome and root structure and its dense formation. 

Our clients were unaware of the reason why their paved access path was starting to crack and rise up, for us it was an instant indicator that rhizome was running under it. It was not until works took place that the extent was apparent.

Once works started it was clear rhizome was running from the gravel area under the paving slabs, as is very often the case, the extent of the rhizome was quite shocking, not only in the area but also the diameter of the rhizomes, these were going to start producing large diameter canes as soon as a weakness in the paving was found, which would have been very soon. Once that happens the issues grow in scale very swiftly. 

Works were completed and the area is now being monitored for any new growth. 

With the high percentage of rhizome removal and new growth if any at all will be extremely limited.
